lost
As we caught a stare,
Deep into the soul of her eyes
I saw sadness.
Forget about your house of cards…
This was the first show The Dead Ends played. it was in a tiny shed in the industrial estate of byron bay, riley sang for us too at this time and our friend Dylan Wilson played guitar riley moved to guitar after a while and i ended up singing. Before i was in the band they recorded two songs at sae in byron bay and being best friends with them i came along and hung out then riley asked me to do some guest vocals on one of the tracks, i had never sung before the only thing id done was play drums so i gave it a try and they ended up asking me to sing aswell as riley. At sae the name ‘the dead ends’ was thought of by Jordan, it was a toss up between that and black swans haha so we jammed and wrote some songs at school and at the sound lounge (which we later got banned from by the stoner owner) and got together a set list of a few songs and a cover and played this first show. A few months later we drove up the gold coast to record with Sam Saljooghi and recorded our first demo. I never thought that it would end up with people singing along to songs i wrote or dancing when we played or travelling especially to see us. we were all so surprised that people were even nodding there heads to the recording haha We played all the shows that we could get on, which sometimes meant traveling for an hour to play to four kids because the other eighty or so went outside to smoke for your set but in saying that we somehow managed to open for some international bands as they came through byron thanks to mr bbhc aka nuz . We started getting some more shows and we started travelling out of the state to play where we ended up meeting some amazing people who are now some of our best friends. we played a show in lismore under a house with a band that got naked and told everyone they were going to bash them, after having to endure that we set up to play and the mic wouldn’t work and while trying to fix it the cops came and we never went to lismore again. The fort was the second AA venue in brisbane we played at, i was nervous as fuck. All i remember is red lips starting and kids singing along and i still smile thinking back to that night and feeling. Buying condoms from the sex shop across the road thinking i’d need them because i recently lost my virginity haha drinking beers with the phengrasmys and dance offs in thriller oh my god i could go on for days with memories like these. I took demos on tour with Word Up! around australia and we started getting a bit of interest from other cities and towns and i regret not making it out to them just imagining the times we could have had. A while back we all finished school and got jobs and went away and came home or moved for good.
On the 16th of april we are playing our last show at the byron bay youth centre. Im deeply sad about this but the world is large and its time we part. I’m so happy that i’m left with the best friends i could have ever asked for and enough amazing memories to fill a dozen books. To EVERYONE that had anything to do with this band who learnt the words, who sung along, bought a shirt or a demo, saw us play, talked shit, hung out with us or even heard us once; thank you from the very bottom of my heart. You have truly made my youth the best i could have ever hoped for and i hope we brightened yours (how ever slightly) too. xo
